Video Tutorial: Wooden Coffee Plaque Using Cricut & Vinyl as Stencil

Hello!
Today I am sharing a wooden plaque that I made for my sister-in-law for her birthday. She showed me a photo she took of a sign in a coffee shop in Europe, which inspired this plaque for her! Keep scrolling for the video tutorial or view on YouTube HERE.

I found the wooden plaque at Michaels. It’s about 10″ x 10″ and was nice quality yet inexpensive. Here are some photos and a little info on how I designed the cut file (not in the video), then hop on down for the video tutorial below.

To make my stencil, I added a 10″x10″ square to my design mat in Cricut Design Space and then spaced out the text boxes to where I liked them. I found the coffee mug as an svg file on Etsy HERE. I cut the file on Oracal 631 removable vinyl so that I could get a nice sticky stencil but it would remove easily. I know some people use Glad Press-n-seal but I have a lot of Oracal 631 and I wanted to be sure I had a nice seal. I haven’t tested the Press-n-seal and didn’t think it would seal as nicely on wood. (It would probably be great on fabric.)

I tested a couple of ways of removing the vinyl: 1. Heat setting the paint just slightly so it was dry to the touch, then removing the vinyl. 2. Removing the vinyl while the paint was still wet. I had heard of people doing it both ways, and I preferred drying it to the touch first. It was less messy and I did not experience any noticeable left from the paint.

I wanted the heart to stand out a little bit and have some dimension. So I used red cardstock and then covered it with Nuvo Crystal Drops for a fun shiny finish.

Here is my video tutorial…you can watch below or in HD on YouTube HERE. Enjoy!
